NOVEMBER 10TH, 2018: AN EVENING WITH MARIA HOWELL
Best known for her role as the choir soloist in the 1985 Oscar-nominated film The Color Purple, Maria Howell is a captivating, dynamic performer, combining an captivating stage presence with a musicality rarely heard in vocalists. She has an innate ability to establish “instant rapport” with an audience. A Gastonia, NC native, now residing in Los Angeles, Howell has been known to leave audiences mesmerized with her powerful, sultry, smooth voice, mixing R&B, gospel and soul into her renditions of jazz classics.
As an actress Howell has appeared in the feature films The Color Purple, The Hunger Games, The Blind Side, and the Academy Award nominated Hidden Figures as well TV’s “Revolution,” “Devious Maids,” and “Saints and Sinners.” As a vocalist Maria has shared the stage with Ray Charles, Najee, George Howard, Ramsey Lewis, George Benson, Nancy Wilson, lyricist Tim Rice and Marvin Hamlischamong others.
In July Maria and Noel Freidline released their first collaborative CD, “Old Devil Moon.” Honoring some of her favorite “Ladies of Song” Howell will be joined by Noel Freidline and his quartet as she pays tribute to such legends as Nancy Wilson, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Carole King and Karen Carpenter.

DECEMBER 22ND, 2018: JINGLE BELL JAZZ WITH MARIA HOWELL
Join the Noel Freidline Quartet and special guest Maria Howell as they continue a NorthStone tradition, and present a special evening of holiday and seasonal favorites. Freidline has been the featured artist several times with the Charlotte Symphony’s “Magic of Christmas.” He brings his same clever arrangements to NorthStone as he and his quartet infuse the air with the holiday spirit, covering such classics as Vince Guaraldi’s “Christmastime Is Here,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” “Here We Come A’Wassailing,” “Let It Snow,” “The Hanukkah Song,” and even Walt Kelly’s “Deck Us All With Boston Charlie.”
This promises to be an intimate evening with great music, great food and great friends.
FEBRUARY 23RD, 2019: JOHN, JOEL, AND NOEL, A TRIBUTE TO BILLY JOEL AND ELTON JOHN WITH THE NOEL FREIDLINE QUARTET
Mention piano players and the discussion will quickly move to Elton John and Billy Joel. The two iconic piano men helped define the 70’s and 80’s. Masters of some of the most indelible melodies in pop music history, Elton John and Billy Joel easily helped write the soundtrack for more than two decades.
Piano man Noel Freidline will be joined by his masterful quartet as they weave in an out of reinterpretations of such classics as “New York State of Mind” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” “Only the Good Die Young” and “Rocket Man.” You won’t be required to sing along, but it certainly won’t be discouraged!
APRIL 6TH, 2019: A JAZZ CELEBRATION OF THE BEATLES
John, Paul, George and Ringo. No last names needed. The Beatles were that iconic, innovative and influential. In less than ten years they redefined pop and rock music and pointed the way as to how music would be created for the next 40 years. Not the least of their contributions may be a lexicon of songs that can stand up to reinterpretation and recasting into most any genre. Their masterful melodies and strong harmonic approach makes their music a perfect jumping off point for jazz musicians.
Join us April 6th, 2019 as the Noel Freidline Quartet closes out the NorthStone Jazz Series premier season with an evening of masterful reimagining of some of the Fab Four’s most well known songs.
